Ed Hearn

Keynote Speaker & Author
Conquering Life's Curves

PRESENTING October 6, 2020

TOPIC Kickoff and Keynote Address:
Conquering Life’s Curves

In 1986, Ed Hearn fulfilled his childhood dream as a member of the World Champion New York Mets. The following year with the Kansas City Royals, he was set to make those big “million-dollar bank deposits” today’s professional athletes are accustomed to, when suddenly, a serious shoulder injury brought a premature end to a very promising and brilliant career.

Less than six months after his baseball career ended, he was diagnosed with three potentially life-threatening health conditions. Once a strong, vibrant professional athlete, he was reduced to a man who could barely care for himself. Ed hung on, though, and now he uses what he learned during that physically challenging time to impact thousands of lives.

Today, after 3 life-saving kidney transplants, years of dialysis, several bouts with cancer,
radiation treatments, the aid of a breathing machine each night, a costly IV treatment once a month, and up to 40 pills per day, Ed has come back to live a life that is truly an inspiration.

As the author of Conquering Life’s Curves – Baseball, Battles & Beyond, Ed has appeared on numerous national television programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The 700 Club and ESPN. He is founder of The Bottom of the Ninth, a Kansas nonprofit corporation dedicated to the mission of rebuilding the spirit and character of this nation.

Ed, his wife, Tricia, and their twenty-five-year-old son, Cody, reside in Shawnee, Kansas. He is very active in various community activities and spends countless hours of his time with the youth of Kansas City. In his spare time, Ed enjoys hunting, fishing, and golf.

PRESENTING October 6, 2020

TOPIC Maximizing Resident Occupancy:  Understanding Asset Protection Tools

Brendan F. Daly is the managing partner of Czepiga, Daly, Pope & Perri, where he practices in the areas of elder law, estate and disability planning and estate administration. Brendan has received the designation of Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA), a certification awarded by the National Elder Law Foundation, the only organization approved by the American Bar Association to offer certification in Elder Law. This certification in Elder Law provides a measure of assurance to the public that the attorney has an in-depth working knowledge of the legal issues that impact the elderly.

Brendan co-counseled in the landmark Medicaid federal district court case of Lopes v. DSS, which was affirmed by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals (2012) permitting the use of immediate spousal annuities in Medicaid applications. The court’s far-reaching verdict now makes it possible for many Connecticut senior married couples to purchase annuities as an asset protection strategy.

Brendan has been selected as a top attorney by SuperLawyers, a designation awarded to the top 5% of attorneys, for eight consecutive years. He graduated from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 1997 with academic distinction.
